Itinerary description
Route starting and finishing at Hayes station, based on the "Hell of the Ashdown Challenge" route ( www.hell.gb.com ) but without the southerly loop to Ashdown itself, and with a connection to Hayes. It starts off with a long ascent punctuated by two short sharp hills (Saltbox and Cudham Hills) then drops down steeply and crosses the M25 before climbing Toy's Hill the "easy" (ha!) way from the North. We stopped for a very welcome cup of coffee at the Fox and Hounds at the top of Toy's Hill. The route then drops sharply down Toy's hill and continues to Hever before travelling East through some lovely countryside. Made a mental note to visit this area on foot then it was hill time again: Bayley's hill, a long, unrelenting stinker that finishes near Sevenoaks. Then down again, back across the M25 and up Star Hill, "the sting in the tail" of the Hell route, but "straw that broke the camel's back" may be more appropriate. Rather than being rewarded with a bracing descent, there was then more climbing, then back, sadder and wiser, to Hayes via Darwin's home village of Downe.
