Itinerary description

REVIEW

Impressive trip of 178 miles that starts in Miami and finishes in Key West, at the end of Florida Keys, the southernmost point of the continental United States. It’s a challenge made in 3 days without much difficulty in 3 stages of 64, 85 and 29 miles respectively.

The continental section passes by Coconut Grove and Pinecrest residential areas following basically the Old Cutler Road (if there is a lot of traffic, you can avoid it passing through residential streets). Last section goes through the Homestead agricultural area with palm nurseries and vegetables plantations.

On leaving Homestead the trail takes the narrow 905A, called Card Sound Road, which enters a mangrove and water area. Before crossing Card Sound Bridge it is interesting to stop on Alabama Jacks because is the last bar and restaurant to rest and have something to eat before the next places in Key Largo.

Second stage starts in Key Largo and takes the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (FKOHT) that follows the old railroad line that arrived to Key West until 1935 through 23 of the rail bridges. The longest and more exciting of which is the 7 Miles Bridge. Some of these have been converted back to their original configuration, but with added safety rails and an asphalt surface. The trail links superb natural areas and historic sites.

About 75% of the trip is a separate trail from US-1 although is necessary to cross it several times. On the rest of the trail is necessary to go by the shoulder of the US-1 without much trouble because it is usually wide. Nevertheless, it is very important to be careful with cars and use always powerful headlight and taillight.

When arriving to Key West you can go to milestone 0 of the US-1 following the coast in which you can visit the Edward B. Knight Pier and the 90 miles to Cuba monument. Before having lunch in one of the several restaurants in Key West, you can take a bath at South Beach to cool down.

RESSENYA

    Saludos,
    Josep
