Itinerary description
A bike ride with two ferry trips and a border crossing ending in a summer tourist town nestled amongst the thousand islands in the St. Lawrence river. The ferry trips give you the best views of the water, breaks up the bike rides and cuts some mileage off the overall distance.
The trip starts in downtown Kingston where you head to the dock at the foot of The Tragically Hip Way. There is no fee for the ferry and it departs hourly during operating months. The crossing takes about 20-25 minutes and is followed by an 11.9 kilometer bike ride south across Wolf Island. I took the most direct route but still managed to miss the second ferry to the U.S. by a minute. The fee for this smaller ferry was $3 (US) and upon arrival is immediately followed by American customs so don't forget to bring your passport.
In the U.S. there are a couple of shoreline towns along the way, Cape Vincent (where your ferry docks) and Clayton before arriving at your destination in Alexandria Bay. I followed the shoreline highway #12 which had a wide paved shoulder and is marked as a cycling route.
There is lots to see and do in Alexandria with boat tours, a beach, restaurants, bars and shops. I went for a swim and waited for friends to finish their tour of Boldt Castle.
