Itinerary description
Also known as the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Shared Use Path. Whatever the name, I had seen several portions from the Kuhio highway and wasn't too keen on exploring it. Maxini insisted and I'm glad she did. There are numerous spectacular viewpoints of the shoreline and ocean (whales occasionally spotted) several beaches, numerous picnic tables, a campsite, a green tunnel, golf course and some shopping spots too.
The path was great for cycling, solidly paved for most of the way. You will have to use some streets and do roadside portions (mostly around Kapaa) where it can be a little confusing as there is limited signage and we didn't see a trail map posted anywhere on the route.
Some hills, the largest is at the north end where we chose to start and finish. Plenty of other places to park and start and if you need bikes I would recommend the town of Kapaa where they were charging around $8 - $10 for half a day.
The trail can be walked, cycled, skateboarded or ran and we saw these uses and more on a beautiful Sunday. Definitely worth a look see, the further north you go the more secluded it gets.
