Itinerary description
From Gravesend to Strood/Rochester via Lower Higham and Upnor, following Route number 1 of the National Cycle Network. About one third of this section is traffic free, two thirds on road.
Return from Strood/Rochester to Gravesend following the National Route 177. This section is traffic free (except 1 km when leaving Strood urban area) but... much too close to the very noisy Watling Street/A2 road.
Route 1 between Gravesend and Strood is completly flat, all of it at sea level. The return route (177) ascends from Strood to the highest point of the trail which is at the car entrance to Shorne Woods Country Park. From that point to Gravesend the route is all downhill.
May be a good choice when everywhere else is too muddy to cycle, in fact the whole route can be perfectly done with a road bike, even the off-road sections.
