Itinerary description
Three-day, on-road tour from Ayrshire to Isle of Arran, Cowal peninsula, Isle of Bute and return using Caledonian MacBrayne ferries (some seasonal, so check in advance). Bikes go free. 94 miles in total (152 kilometres). Starts Ardrossan with ferry (1) to Brodick, Arran. Crosses String Road (moorland) to Lochranza (Lochranza Hotel). Next day, ferry (2) to Cloanaig, Kintyre, short detour to Skipness Castle, then quiet roads to near Tighnabruich (Kames Hotel) using ferry (3) from Tarbert to Portavadie. Final day, steep climb out of Tighnabruich to Colintraive with detour to Strone Point, then ferry (4) to Rudhabodach across Kyles of Bute. Short ride thereafter to Rothesay and main Bute ferry (5) to Wemyss Bay. Parking at Ardrossan and Wemyss bay, towns connected by frequent bus service, but not by train despite railway stations in each. Hotels, pubs or cafes in Brodick, Lochranza, Tarbert, Kames, Tighnabruich, Colintraive and Rothesay but little in between. Mainly undulating. Short legs between ferries. Remote except for busy road into Tarbert. Spectacular island and coastal scenery. Possibility of seeing stags and golden eagles.
