Itinerary description
Ccycling - At 2744 meters of elevation (9,002 ft.), Colle dell'Agnello is the second highest pass in Europe after the Stelvio which is a mere 13 m (42 ft.) higher.
The Agnello is shared with France, named Agnel in French and in our Piedmontese language. Every first Sunday of September, the road is closed to all motor vehicles on both slopes for the safety of a multitude of cyclists taking this epic climb on the occasion of the "Agnel 2744" non -competitive event. No registration required, but stopping in front of the Tourism Office in Pontechianale is an occasion to receive a gift and a label to be displayed on the bicycle. Although the official event departs from Pontechianale, we opted to add some 7 Kms and about 320 m of positive climb by starting from Casteldelfino to find better parking options.
Four editions of the Giro d'Italia had a stage with the finish line at this pass, or was through it. Last of which, in 2016 the never forgotten Michele Scarponi transited first here. A sculpture on site stands as a memorial, carved from a wood block from the Marche region, his homeland.
