Itinerary description
Cycling - Not much advertised, the Abbazia di Santa Maria di Vezzolano is an exquisite example of Romanic/Gothic architecture. It is in grand conditions.
Oldest document mentioning it dates to 1095 AD but its foundation is believed to have occurred in 773 AD and ordered by Charlemagne who had a vision at the site.
The abbey could not be accessed and visited due to Covid-19 restrictions. Photos of the interiors are from archive.
The ride started in Casalborgone and unfolded through the ups-and-downs of rolling hills covered with vineyards and hazelnut groves. Great panoramas over the Western Alps, with fresh snow, and quaint small perched villages. One of these is Cinzano, home of the homonym world-famous brand of Vermouth.
