Monterol - Buzet
For this first day of cycling in Croatia we will cross Istria to avoid the overloaded coast. We will be able to immerse ourselves in the interior and in particular in the fortified and fortified medieval cities.
Istria, Croatia's largest peninsula jutting out into the Adriatic, is a land of cultural mix and contrasts due to its geographical location on the borders of Slovenia, Italy and Croatia, isolated from the latter by the Ćićarija massif. But also because of its history: many peoples have left their mark: Histrians, Greeks, Romans, Illyrians, Venetians, Austrians, Hungarians, Italians, Yugoslavs,... who made what is today Istria. The wealth of Istria's natural and cultural heritage is undeniable. It has, on the one hand, the beauty of a preserved coastline, with a sea of crystalline waters and magnificent beaches, as well as a series of extraordinary Roman and Venetian cities: Poreč, Pula. Rovinj, Novigrad,... On the other side, the mountainous interior with authentic medieval towns: Buzet, Motovun, Hum, Grožnjan, ... and magnificent landscapes reminiscent of Tuscany. We talk about Istria as the "Croatian Tuscany"
