Itinerary description

18/03/2012

This cycle ride follows the National Cycle Route 1 from Colchester as far as Tiptree and then quiet roads and lanes.

Leave Colchester to the west along Lexden Road, before turning left where signposted, to follow a pleasant path alongside school playing fields. At the end of the path, cross a road and continue along a small lane to a busier road. The route continues to be marked and in a few minutes crosses a playing field where you head straight ahead to a small gap in the hedge. The route now continues along a lovely sunken lane. After one road crossing the way continues along the lane and eventually emerges a short distance from a roundabout. There is a cycle path as far as Olivers Lane which is followed along, down and across a river before climbing on the other side to reach open countryside.

Now Route 1 continues ahead on a road as through to Layer Breton.and then on pleasant roads to enter Tiptree.

Before Tiptree we made a short diversion to see Layer Marney Tower and its nearby church.

We left the Cycle Route 1 in Tiptree to go to Kelvedon, Coggeshall and back to Colchester.

Kelvedon should be reached by following a small lane to Windmill Hill, then quiet roads and over a bridge to the edge of this sleepy settlement.

NOTE: From Kelvedon we took the B1024 road to Coggeshall. However, we should have continued along the main street for about another 500 metres, then turned left along a quieter road passing through Feering. This is a much safer option and adds nothing to the overall distance.

There is a tricky crossing of the A120 after Coggeshall. Extra caution is required as the traffic is fast at this point and sometimes constant.

However, on the opposite side it is peaceful again as country lanes are followed all the way to Great Tey. A beautiful route to follow at ay time of the year, this area comes alive in Spring with many of the surrounding fields in bright yellow from the rape seed crops.

After Great Tey, the Sudbury Branch railway line is traversed on a bridge and the ride reaches Aldham and then the busy A604 road. Caution is again needed but a footpath on the opposite side can be used to follow the road the short distance to the turn off to Thurgoods Farm.

Back roads are followed all the way back to the edge of Colchester and the outward route re-joined again in Stanway.
