Itinerary description
Starts at Battle of Bannockburn Heritage Centre (National Trust for Scotland, car parking), off A872, south of Stirling. Follows minor roads, canal towpath, and riverside, railway and other paths, so sturdy bikes best. Takes in former iron foundry towns of Denny, Dunipace and Carronshore, Falkirk Wheel boat lift, Kelpies sculptures (colossal mythical horses), Carron River and Lade, Forth & Clyde Canal, including new sea lock, and Helix Park between Falkirk and Grangemouth (sculptures of giant lips and human sundial). Goes near Antonine Wall (turf) in Bonnybridge area. Passes great gate of Carron Iron Works (famous for the Carronade - a mortar type of cannon) and through grounds of former Bellsdyke Hospital (now residential housing). Ride has a rural feel despite proximity to major population centres. Food and drink at Rosebank Beefeater, Union Inn (Lock 16, F & C Canal) and Shore Inn, Carronshore.
