Itinerary description
You follow mainly asphalt or concrete cycling paths along the canal and in the Forêt de Soignes. However, in Braine-le-Château, and at the end of the trail from Havré to Nouvelles you cycle on streets (at times on a dedicated cycling lane). From Rhode-St-Genèse you cycle on old cobbled road not appropriate for city bikes. At times you also follow dirt road.
Along the canal there are usually cycling paths on both sides, but I was following the signs and changing the sides. Along Bxl-Charleroi canal first you cycle on the eastern side, before Ronquières you switch to the western side, then in Feluy to the eastern again. In Seneffe, you have to change to the western side again as there is a fork and one canal branch continues to Charleroi while the other to La Louvière and Mons.
The elevator of Strépy-Thieu (with a nice panoramic view) is a highlight of the trip, together with the elevator of Ronquières. You also cross several picturesque villages and settlements (Alsemberg, Wauthier-Braine, Havré, Spiennes, Nouvelles).
