Itinerary description
From Bainbridge village green take the Countersett road, then after about a mile, go straight on along the unmade Roman Road. This takes you on a steady climb frrom 700ft in Bainbridge to 2,000ft at Howgate Head.
I did the ride on a hybrid bike but it would be better suited to a mountain bike as in parts it is quite rough. I had to get off and push on the roughest bits.
Once at the top you take a sharp right onto the tarmac road that drops you rapidly down to Gayle and Hawes. Plenty of refreshments here if you are in need.
I carried on then turned left following the Hardrow sign. After about half a mile and a steep hill turn right following the Askrigg sign.
After about 4 miles turn right again back into Bainbridge and finish where you started.
Refreshments available here at the Corn Mill Tea Rooms or the Rose and Crown pub.
