Waypoints
Karak Castle
Built around 1100 AD, Karak formed part of a great line of Crusader castles stretching from Aqaba to Turkey. Its commanding position, almost 1000 meters above the Dead Sea Valley, made it a strategic asset of great importance. Taxes levied on passing caravans helped nearby Jerusalem prosper.
Petra
Petra (the lost city) was the capital of the Nabateans -Arabs who dominated the lands of Jordan during pre-Roman time. Only re-"discovered" in the early 1800's, many became familuar with Petra as a scene in Indian Jones and the Last Crusade. The so called Treasury building and others were carved out of solid rock.
Burdah Bridge (Wadi Rum)
The Burdah Bridge in Wadi Rum. is just one of the unusual features of this moon-like desert landscape. Climbers are especially attracted to 600-foot tall sandstone "jebels" rising from the sand.
Mount Nebo
The vista from Mt. Nebo includes the Dead Sea, the West Bank, the Jordan River, and, on a clear day, Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
Rest House Sweimeh
Although completely devoid of life itself, it is famous for it's restorative powers. On northern shores of the Dead Sea, at Sweimeh, the Government Rest House provides showers and a restaurant along a choice stretch of beach.
Amman Roman Theater
Near downtown Amman, ruins of a Roman Theater are clear evidence of ancient Philadelphia. The theater is still used periodically for sporting and cultural events, accommodating 6000 spectators
