Itinerary description
In terms of views it is stunning. It is worth doing at least once, though getting up is pricey.
It is a good track for beginners, although if you start with views like those….The track is really uncomplicated as it follows a flat path (old Rigi Railway line). There are no sharp turns or anything. There is even a tiny 50-100 metre tunnel you will go through (track groomers have been kind enough to fill it with snow so you don't have to take skis off).
The track is groomed for classic only. Net time was 1 h 5 mins with plenty of photo stops.
However, the rest of the path is a walking path which is groomed just like any skating track. It can be skated without problem, though track will be peppered with footsteps. That said, if you come across walkers, or snow shoe walkers, be courteous and yield if you skate. They do not advertise it as skating but it can be skated.
There are approximately 150-200 metres of height gain from Kaltbad to Scheidegg but they are so evenly spread that you hardly feel them (only a little once you are a few hundred metres from Scheidegg). If you are feeling like only doing 7k then you have the option of starting in Scheidegg and going sligthly down or in Kaltbad and going slightly up.
The track is high up and can be quite windy. You will alternate some south faces and some north faces and the temperature feeling can change a bit.
This is probably a good track early and late in the season.
Snow conditions under Cross Country section
A good alternative to this track is Stoos.
How to get there.
Goldau and take the the train just a couple of stops until Krabel and there take the cable car from Krabel to Scheidegg. If you go up further you will need to walk with your skis 2 to 3 km depending on where you get off. You will be able to ski off the Cable Car, the first section is ungroomed-walking path and lies just a little bit below facing the Vierwaldstattersee.
Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad with the cable car
Vitznau to Rigi Kaltbad with the train (slow)
In Kaltbad the "Loipe" starts about 50 metres off the train stop. As you look mountain up to the right. Follow yellow hiking signs for Scheidegg.
A little tip. If you come Zürich you can have your skis on in Scheidegg in 1hr and 5 mins.. if you take the 7.10 am train to Milano centrale (normally it´s about 1h20 mins).
