Itinerary description
This is a longish distance event in classic style, and covers a chunk of the 220km of tracks available in the Engadin valley.
It has a start and a finish in Zuoz (easy to get to with train). It has a 9.30 am start and you can stay in the many towns of the Engadin Valley as they as they are well connected by public transport.
Diagonela has very flat valley sections along with two passes over the Stazer Wald (near St. Moritz). Overall, Endomondo suggests about 500 metres of positive climb so it has its fair share of hills.
A very pretty section is the bit going from Pontresina to Val Roseg.
This race is a really good alternative to Vasaloppet (if you have to chose, if you don´t choose both)
1) it is not crowded
2) the mountain scenery of the Engadin Valley trumps alternatives
3) Finding a hotel to stay over in Engadin is a breeze, even at short notice
4) Zurich airport lies quite central
5) Not having to wake up at 3 am for a bus to the start
6) Not being stuck for an hour on the infamous uphill bottleneck start of the Vasaloppet
The Diagonela 2018 was unsurprisingly packed with Swedish skiers.
Now, what you will not find in the Diagonela are large crowds cheering and general party atmosphere (if you like party atmosphere, then Vasaloppet has more tradition.. and if you skate, the Engadin Marathon is a true ski party).
Diagonela takes place in January so a 65km stretch might be a bit early in the season.
Overall, very high marks for the Diagonela race in 2018.
