Itinerary description
Left Volgograd at 8.30am for Astrakhan. The first 20km took an hour over very poor roads and through heavy traffic. Once we hit the M6 things improved no end and the rest of the 400km passed quickly. Most of this road has been, or is being, resurfaced, so 60/70 mph was possible. Great changes to the landscape. Very flat and dry, with little vegetation, apart from the banks of the Volga. Also housing poor single dwellings in very widely spaced villages.
