Our arrival in Cairo Egypt was at dawn on March 25, the first thing we did was exchange dollars for Egyptian pounds in an airport bank, then we bought the Egyptian VISA with a value of $25 dollars, then we went to the line of immigration, they placed the VISA in our passport and stamped it, without questioning and without questioning anything, we continued to the next previous module before picking up the luggage, a police officer approached us to ask us questions about the reason and permanence in Egypt, we answered and it was not enough , he continued to inquire, the company for which I worked in my country, seniority and position that I held, as there were no more suspicions they allowed us to pick up our luggage, on the flight from Paris to Cairo, before the plane took off, the French police detained a passenger who was apparently suspicious, maybe it is the cause that the Egyptian police were questioning the passengers, then we bought some SIM cards to use the local communication services, we decided on Vodafon, then we requested a taxi to the hotel in the Giza area, we arrived quickly and arriving at 4:00 hrs. At the hotel we fell asleep from the long trip, we woke up until 11:00 a.m. Our itinerary changed radically and we had to adjust our schedule to visit the tourist places in Cairo, we started with the Saqqara pyramids…
Saqqara is the site of the main necropolis of the city of Memphis, on the west bank of the Nile, located about 30 km south of Cairo and 22 km southeast of the Giza pyramids. Functional from the First Dynasty (ca. 3050 BC) to Christian times (ca. 540). In 1979, the Memphis complex with its necropolis and pyramid fields (Giza, Abusir, Saqqara and Dahshur) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, with the name of Memphis and its necropolis - Areas of the pyramids from Giza to Dahshur . It is classified as cultural.
the ancient necropolis
The importance of the necropolis is due to the remains of funerary complexes, erected by the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom and the large number of tombs of nobles, since the place, consecrated to the god Sokar, was chosen by the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom to establish their necropolis; it was looted since ancient times.
The tomb of the oldest monarch possibly buried in this necropolis could have been that of Narmer, although he has a tomb, or cenotaph, B17 in the necropolis of Umm el Qaab, in Abydos, far from Saqqara, in Upper Egypt, and another in the necropolis of Tarjan.
In Saqqara Imhotep (the first known engineer in the world) designed for his pharaoh Zoser (Dyeser), of the III dynasty, a tomb with a revolutionary design, the step pyramid, the first of great dimensions erected in Egypt. There are also many mastabas of members of the elite of the Old Kingdom, who used to be located near the pyramids of their sovereigns, from Zoser (Dyeser) to Pepi II.
During the Old Kingdom, Saqqara was abandoned as a royal burial place, and Giza was chosen as a new royal necropolis during the Fourth Dynasty. Shepseskaf used it again, as well as the following pharaohs of the V and VI dynasties. Starting in the late period, a large number of sacred animals, especially sacred oxen (incarnation of Apis), as well as baboons, falcons and ibis, were buried in the north of the necropolis, possibly due to the area's relationship with Imhotep. A little further to the east there are tombs of dogs, jackals and cats, dating back to Greco-Roman times. Subsequently, already in the Coptic period, the Coptic monastery of Apa Jeremias was established, a small settlement, to the south of the Unis processional road, using materials from ancient constructions.
Both my wife Lucy and a server were amazed by this majestic Egyptian cemetery, highly recommended.
