On the 13th August we embarked on a day trip to explore some of the most iconic natural wonders in the American Southwest. Our journey began with a scenic drive approximately 100 kms east to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (Arizona). Here, we found ourselves at the shores of Lake Powell, a vast reservoir formed by the Colorado River. We continued and stop for a visit to the informative Carl Hayden Visitor Center, where we learned about the Glen Canyon Dam's engineering marvels and the area's geology. Nearby, we took a look at the towering Glen Canyon Dam itself, and crossed the Carl R. Hayden Bridge which offered breathtaking views of the Colorado River and Marble Canyon.
Continuing our adventure, we headed north to reach Marble Canyon. We made a stop at Horseshoe Bend, an iconic meander of the Colorado River, for a short hike that led us across a sandy path, culminating to the incredible overlook from where we gazed down at the breathtaking horseshoe-shaped bend etched into the deep red sandstone cliffs, carved by the Colorado River.
We continued to the historic Navajo Bridge, consisting of a pair of steel arch bridges that span the Colorado River, located on Navajo Tribal Lands at the northeast portion of the Grand Canyon. The newer bridge handled car traffic, while the older one had been repurposed for pedestrians, providing a thrilling vantage point to appreciate the rugged terrain below. As we gazed down, we were fortunate to spot a majestic California condor perched beneath the bridge. :)
And there was this sign reminded us not to jump over the bridge....
On our return journey to Kanab, we dove the scenic route 89A through Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, where the rich colors of the landscape were enhanced by the enchanting tones of the setting sun.
