Road trip day 1: Las Vegas to Death Valley (California)
10/08/2023
We headed west on Highway 160, which stretches out into vast desert landscapes. After passing the small town of Pahrum, we continued on Highway 160 until we reached the California state line. Upon crossing into California, the road becomes State Route 190 (CA-190). We drove through the Amargosa Valley and the Funeral Mountains, taking in the striking desert scenery in the descent into Death Valley National Park to embark on a scorching adventure through one of the hottest places on Earth. The mercury soared 44°C as we passed through Furnace Creek, home to the world's highest recorded temperature of 134°F. We descended into Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level. We marveled at Artist Drive's colorful, mineral-streaked hills, hiked the rugged Golden Canyon. We hit Highway 190, winding our way through the breathtaking landscapes of Death Valley and ventured into the mesmerising Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Day one was a kind of introduction to the heat and wonders of our journey.
