The Vrsic Pass is the highest road in Slovenia and crosses the Julian Alps from Kranjska Gora to Bovec, although we stopped the GPS in Trenta, where we stopped to visit the museum, eat and buy local cheeses at the market.
From Kransjka Gora to the top of the mountain pass there are 26 180º curves, most of them paved, and from the port to Trenta another 24, also 180º but in this case paved like the rest of the road. It is an amazing tour (only open in summer) in which we make several stops at various viewpoints to enjoy great views.
In one of these viewpoints is the sculpture of Dr Julius Kugy, writer, botanist, humanist, lawyer and officer of Slovenian descent, a great lover of these mountains, which he thoroughly explored and wrote about at length.
Special mention should be made of the Russian Chapel (Ruska Capela). According to the website of turismoeslovenia.es: "Between 1915 and 1916, in the middle of World War I, and with battles such as the Isonzo Front very close to this place, the Austrian army ordered the construction of the Vrsic Pass to its more than 10,000 prisoners In this way they achieved a strategic communication to equip themselves with supplies in their battle against the Italian troops.
The conditions were arduous, and in March 1916, during construction, a large avalanche buried nearly 300 prisoners. For this reason, his companions decided years later to build the Russian Chapel in homage to the dead. "
Wonderful tour through extraordinary landscapes.
