Itinerary description
Many buildings along the original Oregon Trail still stand, like Hollenberg Pony Express Station, erected in 1857 by Gerat and Sophia Hollenberg in Hanover, KS. Limited by the distance a horse or wagon team could cover in a day, pioneers along the trails could have found refuge at stations like this one. In addition to lodging travelers, the Hollenbergs also sold supplies and meals. They saw a brief boost to their business when the Pony Express began its runs.
As the westward trails lost popularity and travel by railroad became common, the number of customers at the station declined. The building at Hollenberg Station became a farmhouse, and was later purchased by the government and entrusted to the Kansas Historical Society as Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site.
