Itinerary description
My journey along the Oregon National Historic Trail had taken me through states I had never previously visited, like Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. I had observed the geography of the United States change across vast distances. The stories of pioneers had helped me understand the risks of their experience, and the lessons from some destinations had reminded me of the tragedies that often accompany a clash of cultures.
As a veteran, I had identified also with the soldiers responsible for establishing and maintaining the uneasy peace on the prairie, which was pivotal for the prosperity of those pioneers. And I had learned about other veterans, from decades earlier, whose travels in the area shaped early preservation efforts at the national level.
Seeing the huge map outside the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, I was surprised at how many places I had visited in two weeks. I also marveled at the comprehensive nature of The Oregon Trail video game, and how many sites it included. For all of the criticism that video games received when I was in elementary school, time spent struggling to defeat the game tragedy algorithm and arrive at the Willamette Valley remains a strong positive memory from those years.
Oregon National Historic Trail: 10/10 would recommend. There are several National Historic Trails that crisscross the United States. Time to explore another.
