Itinerary description

Here are some words that rhyme with The Dalles: pals; gals; canals.

The name of this area is attributed to use of a French word to describe slabs of rock in the Columbia River: les dalles. The slabs caused rapids where the water passed over the rocks. The depiction of the Columbia River in The Oregon Trail video game scores points again for accuracy.

Fort Dalles was built near the place where those rocks triggered those rapids, but not until 1850. And the site was not called Fort Dalles until 1853. This explains why Fort Dalles did not appear in The Oregon Trail video game, which is set in 1848, even though the location was featured.

The original Surgeon’s Quarters from Fort Dalles is shown here. It is now protected as part of the Fort Dalles Museum, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

When saying the name of the Willamette Valley, the emphasis in on the “am” of Willamette, not the “Will,” or the “et.” The “te” is silent. Will-AM-et.
