Itinerary description
Fort Walla Walla was built many times, in different locations, for different reasons: it is understandable that the programmers of The Oregon Trail video game did not provide a detailed presentation of its structure. Instead, they focused on its original purpose: the first Fort Walla Walla was built by the North West Company in 1818, to serve as a fur trading post.
Due to hostilities between pioneers, settlers, trappers, and the local indigenous peoples, early versions of Fort Walla Walla were abandoned in 1855. The following year, the United States Army increased its presence in the area, and began construction of another Fort Walla Walla. Now, tourists can visit some of the original buildings from the pioneer village established near the later iterations of Fort Walla Walla. These buildings are protected as part of the Fort Walla Walla Museum.
In the screenshot of the site taken from The Oregon Trail video game, stacks of pelts stand near traders in negotiation. The building itself is only represented by a distant wall of logs.
