Itinerary description

I crossed the Kansas River more than once while driving on the nondescript roads and bridges that led away from Missouri along the Oregon National Historic Trail. The sun had set, so I wanted a place to sleep. Scott Spring Oregon Trail Park looked suitable. It appeared on the map to be a roadside rest area, and I could be quite comfortable at one of those until morning.

The perimeter of the park surrounded a loop at a turnout off the Road to Oz Highway, just south of Westmoreland, KS. There was a statue of oxen pulling a covered wagon, and a shelter with picnic tables, but all I wanted was a place to park undisturbed. I followed half of the loop, then reversed down a dirt road to tuck my truck underneath a patch of trees.

A few minutes later, local police arrived and asked me to relocate. Parking overnight was prohibited, so I scouted a different location to sleep and returned to the road.
