Itinerary description
The designers of The Oregon Trail video game displayed impressive faithfulness to source material. They probably researched the sites included in the game, and found the attached picture taken by William Henry Jackson in 1870. Jackson had served in the American Civil War before he relocated to Omaha, NE and pursued the nascent art of photography. On a federally-funded expedition across Wyoming to Yellowstone with geologist and fellow veteran Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, Jackson assembled a photography portfolio that helped justify establishing the area as the first American National Park. One of his photographs captured what is now Fort Laramie National Historic Site.
