Itinerary description
The only way to properly conduct my road trip along the Oregon National Historic Trail was from the beginning, so my first stop was the Jackson County Courthouse, also called the Historic Truman Courthouse, in Independence, MO. The Jackson County Historical Society now manages this site, located in Independence Square on North Main Street and West Lexington. The courthouse is also featured in The Oregon Trail video game.
I approached the site from Santa Fe Park, also in Independence, MO. This site preserves ruts made by covered wagons on the trail. After seeing the courthouse, I continued to the overlook of Wayne City Landing by the Missouri River, one of the crossing points used by travelers on the original Oregon Trail.
