14-hour car route (even if the km are only 342) from the 300 meters of Islamabad to 1000 meters of Chilas through the 4180 meters of the Babusar Pass. An alternative route, longer and more busy that avoids the pass, is the Karakorum Highway that goes up the Indus valley.
From the warm plains of Islamabad, the slopes of the green pre-Himalayan mountains of Abbottabad and Manserah rise up. Climb to Naran, a summer resort frequented by the Pakistanis. Continuing to climb you will find residual avalanches that are a curiosity for tourists, including use as a refrigerator and for games on the snow.
From the Babusar Pass you do not see the nanga Parbat, but the surrounding mountains are a good show. The road then descends precipitously to Chilas, in the spectacular Indus valley, where there is a good hotel (the last).
Same route (and same time) on return from trekking.
Along the way there are numerous police checkpoints that take note of all foreigners (compulsory permit).
