Itinerary description

This driving and walking trek traverses most of the south-western peninsula of the island of Trinidad... You'll traverse the “oil belt” throughout the south and then some of the best beaches that the south has to offer... The roads are generally alright, though a bit narrow. Some of the roads through the smaller villages are in very rough shape so exercise some amount of vigilance as you drive... Throughout the trail there are quite a few shops selling local cuisine that are reasonably priced and quite good... The mangrove at Icacos Point makes for quite a bit of very good photography with some of the swamp birds... Icacos Point beach is in my opinion, is the best beach in southern Trinidad. The coastline of Venezuela, and hence the South American mainland, is only a short distance away from here across the “Serpents Mouth.” The beach is also quite long and makes for a good walk early morning or late evening. The intense noonday heat makes it exhausting otherwise... Columbus Bay is a short drive away from Icacos Point. In fact, at low tide it is possible to walk to Columbus Bay along the coastline from Icacos Point. At Columbus Bay there are areas of the Bay that is worth exploring, including a small bluff that skirts the rock faces out into the ocean. From here there are ample opportunities for interesting photography of the entire beach and coastline... Granville Bay is some distance along the Southern Main Road. It is another of the best beaches on the south coast. Unfortunately when I visited there was a fair amount of garbage left behind by careless beachgoers. This was a major problem both on the shoreline and in the ocean... This note assumes that you would drive directly to Icacos Point and start exploring from there. However, you can do this in reverse because you'll get to Granville Bay Road first, then Columbus Bay, and lastly Icacos Point when driving along the Southern Main Road... Happy Trails.
