Exploring Los Iros Bay.

The driving route for this trail is quite similar to the Princes' Town to Los Iros Bay driving trail. The main difference with this trail is that more emphasis was placed on walking the length of Los Iros Bay during low tide. Los Iros Bay is very nice for walking but there are quite a lot of blackflies. A couple sprays of a good insect repellant would help with this problem. The Southeastern side of the beach is very nice but a bit rocky much further up along the shore. The Southwestern side of the beach alternates from sand to rocks, to mud. The mud on the extreme Southwestern end of the bay is extremely slippery so exercise caution. Otherwise its also a great spot to get a few good shots of the South American mainland only a few miles distant...
“Los Iros” translated from the Spanish means “The Rocks.” People who live outside Los Iros know little of the area, except, of course, for Los Iros Bay where fun in the sun continues unabated during the July/August holidays. But for those who know, Los Iros is a place where nature and industry exists side by side. Geographically, Los Iros is located on the Southern Coast of Trinidad between Erin and Taparo. Los Iros Bay can be described as an open beach, backed by a cliffed coast. This coast experiences a high rate of coastal erosion. This is a genuine cause of concern for local residents. Most of the local youths go onto the beach to “hustle” after leaving school. This is also the reality that youth in the neighbouring fishing communities of Cedros and Icacos face. Formal education does not offer much hope to youth unwilling to migrate to the more urban settings of Trinidad. People in Los Iros say they find it difficult to find permanent employment. As Los Iros is an agricultural district, most seek jobs in animal husbandry and planting crops. Erin Farms, a local farm and factory which produces pork and chicken products, is one of the largest employers. Los Iros also produces fishermen, the main fishing depot is in Erin, and not Los Iros beach. Dairy cattle farming and horticulture are also major industries where people can find jobs. Others head to the oil industry in nearby Palo Seco, working for Trinidad Petroleum (TP) and British Petroleum (BP). Some take more temporary posts such as estate police or guard jobs.
