Itinerary description
Trail from Hayastan to Tstsakhach’ passing through:
- Khor Virap (41.5 km)
- Noravank monastery (124.9 km)
It was a great one day trip to 2 old monasteries and the ancient cave with the stopover at Hin Areni winery.
Khor Virap - the closest monastery to the Turkish border, beautiful views on the mount Ararat. The monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of the Armenian Catholicos. Khor Virap means deep dungeon, referring to the church lore where Gregory the Illuminator was kept after professing his Christian faith.
Noravank means “New Monastery” in Armenian. However, today this name does not fit, as the monastery is already more than eight centuries old. Noravank was one of medieval Armenia's most important religious, cultural, and educational centers. Like any other sacred site built in Medieval times, the monks at Noravank Monastery copied religious texts and created illuminated manuscripts.
Areni, cave 1 - you'll see the oldest winery in the world. It has multiple layers of human activities, claiming that it has been continuously used as a residence. Archaeological excavations at the site uncovered a 6,100-year-old winery, wine press, jars, grape seeds, a 5,500-year-old leather shoe, a burial site, and other artifacts.
