Itinerary description
Sab Bani Khamis
Sab Bani Khamis (also known as As Sab) ( ساب بني خميس) is an abandoned mountain village situated near Jebel Shams. With the rise of Sultan Qaboos and the significant transformations that reshaped the country, the inhabitants of Sab Bani Khamis succumbed to the gravity of modernity. The village was part-abandoned in the 1960s. It was used as an occasional winter home until 2000, when the spring that watered its crops ran dry and the gardens withered. By that point, the Omani government was offering land on the valley floor, and incentives to live closer to amenities and schools. Today, they have settled in Wadi Ghul or Al Hamra, the largest town in the region.
Just outside the village, you'll find the Sab Bani Khamis waterfall (شلالات ساب بني خميس) cascade, which, to the best of my knowledge, has four main tiers:
1) 30 meters
2) 150 meters
3) 20 meters
4) 385 meters
On this trip, we rappelled down the first two stages.
Parking and Camping
We parked our cars here 23.222609, 57.205187. Come with 4x4 car.
The night before the abseiling we camped at 23.220807, 57.195096. Do not leave any trash!
Must-have gear
1) 3 liters of water (November), electrolytes, food
2) hiking shoes,
3) abseiling equipment (no details here, if you do this drop then you know everything)
4) via ferrata lanyards and energy absorbers
