Itinerary description
Site Veliko i Malo blato at Povljane on the Island of Pag is especially important for migrating and wintering birds. Velo blato is a lake with fresh water, and Malo blato has brackish and salt water. Dense wetland vegetation provides habitat for many birds during nesting, migration and wintering. Recent studies recorded 168 species of birds. There can often be seen flocks of Eurasias Coots, grebes, herons, Ferruginous Duck, Northern Lapwing and Eurasian Spoonbill. While Veliko blato is a large open surface water, Malo blato in the summer is dried due to thick layers of wetland flora. Malo blato is one of the most important nesting site in Croatia of endangered Montagu's Harrier. There are about a dozen nesting pairs of this raptor whose nests bend on the ground. Site is protected as an ornithological Special reserve from 1988.
