Itinerary description

Where Vouga river finds its end, there is a unique low lands region called "Baixo Vouga lagunar". This swampy area measures around 4600 hectares, and there you can find loads of bird wild life, such as storks, herons, goshawks etc. Some migratory birds, like flamingos, usually make a pitstop in this region.

As it is a low land region, some water containing technology is needed, in order to contain, and separate sea water from potable water, so rice plantations are possible. Bioria it's a local project which uses the access paths of those exact rice plantations, and many other paths of low or non-existent motoring vehicles traffic, which leads to a pleasant, noise free and safe bycicle ride.

All of that turns this region perfect for hiking, and also, in our context, cycling. It's a nice alternative to the Euro Velo 1,between Furadouro Beach (Ovar) and São Jacinto, avoiding many km's of road traffic, and a ferry crossing.

It's true you will add more km's, but as a compensation, you will end up at Aveiro, using wooden walkways all over the water, it's a brilliant piece of engineering. Once in Aveiro, you can taste our delicious sweets, and see the "moliceiro" boats, once used to transport seaweeds to fertilize the plantation fields.

If you need infos about tracks, how to get off from the EV1, how to get in again, feel free to contact us at cyclingtuga@gmail.com.
