Itinerary description

Second episode of the Silver Coast bycicle trip from Figueira da Foz to Lisbon, we did Nazaré to Peniche.

In this second day we finally had the wind helping us, the so called "nortada" wind, a North to South wind blowing. Despite the fact that was a very unstable day weatherwise, it´s always a big help to count on the wind pushing us.

From Nazaré to São Martinho do Porto, we climbed a hill hiking our bikes, and for severall km we cycled 100 mt (~ 330ft) above sea level, with an outstanding view over Peniche, Berlengas islands and also Nazaré. We also had some fun downhill offroad trails, begginer level, but really funny ones.

At São Martinho do Porto we went around the bay, trying to follow the Dunes pathway, but at some parts was impossible to follow.

After that new climb towards a new hill, with similar altitude than the previous one, and again, nice views over Peniche and Berlengas, this time Nazaré was fading away little by little. The road had little traffic, but with wide shoulders, we even reached 61,7km/h! (~38 Mph) downing hill towards Foz do Arelho, where we had lunch break.

After Foz do Arelho, the reason we did way more km than the direct line, was because we went around Óbidos Lagoon, a 25 km detour around the lagoon, totally worth it, despite the tricky weather (we were almost hitted by an huge rainfall). The other option would be hike a bike over the sand, crossing the connection between the lagoon and the sea, which is normally closed, so making possible to walk over the sand.

Last part of the day, after detouring the lagoon, new and final climb to a third hill, in which top we could clearly see already Peniche, our final destination. After crossing severall golf resorts, we joined some cabagges farm offroads, before arriving to Peniche Peninsula. Once there, we visited a couple of rock formations, Baleal beach, and the Cherry on Top, the sunset just when we were arriving at "Carvoeiro" lighthouse cape.

Nice and challenging day, with stunning views due to the hills. Keep tunned with us for more episodes of this marvelous adventure.
