Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 08-Puyuhuapi-Villa Amengual

Leaving Puyuhuapi, we face the paved road that marks the beginning of our next stage. But it won't be long before we enter the feared and revered "Cuesta Queulat", a legendary climb in the National Park of the same name. With its numerous curves and a gravel road in poor condition, this pass challenges us to overcome 580 meters in height in an epic battle of 9 kilometers that seems to have no end, since the road extends 3 or 4 km beyond where the sign indicates.

Before reaching the port, we cross the impressive Queulat Valley, where the forest walls rise majestically, crowned by snow-capped peaks and dotted with waterfalls falling in all directions. About 25 kilometers away, we see from the road the imposing hanging snowdrift, a mass of ice suspended over the abysses of the river that leaves us breathless.

Around kilometer 60, we leave the gravel behind and return to the asphalt, which will accompany us to Villa Amengual. The road continues next to the river and the lakes, offering us spectacular views as we ascend towards the next pass. Here, the peaks get closer and closer, rising on the horizon like imposing guardians of our journey. The exciting descent returns our adrenaline as we descend along paved roads.

But the adventure is not over yet. Two more mini-ports still await us, the last one being especially tough, with about 6 challenging kilometers before reaching the town. Here, we try to find refuge in the Cyclist Shelter, a magical place where the kind Mrs. Inés welcomes everyone with hot coffee and homemade sweets, offering to every one a home away from home at a more than reasonable price. Although we were unlucky that the shelter was closed that day, we found shelter at El Michay, a cozy restaurant run by the charming Mrs. Verónica, who provides us with the necessary services to regain strength with a comforting lunch and dinner and a hearty breakfast.

Saliendo de Puyuhuapi, nos enfrentamos a la carretera asfaltada que marca el inicio de nuestra próxima etapa. Pero no pasará mucho tiempo antes de que nos adentremos en la temida y venerada "cuesta Queulat", una legendaria subida en el Parque Nacional del mismo nombre. Con sus numerosas curvas y un firme de ripio en mal estado, este puerto nos desafía a superar 580 metros de altura en una batalla épica de 9 kilómetros que parece no tener fin, ya que el camino se extiende uno 3 o 4 kms más allá de donde indica el cartel.

Antes de llegar al puerto, atravesamos el impresionante valle de Queulat, donde las paredes del bosque se alzan majestuosamente, coronadas por cumbres nevadas y salpicadas de cascadas que caen en todas direcciones. A unos 25 kilómetros de distancia, llegamos a ver desde la carretera el imponente ventisquero colgante, una masa de hielo suspendida sobre los abismos del río que nos deja sin aliento.

Alrededor del kilómetro 60, dejamos atrás el ripio y regresamos al asfalto, que nos acompañará hasta la Villa Amengual. La carretera sigue pegada al río y a los lagos, ofreciéndonos vistas espectaculares a medida que ascendemos hacia el siguiente puerto. Aquí, las cumbres se acercan cada vez más, elevándose en el horizonte como guardianes imponentes de nuestra travesía. La emocionante bajada nos devuelve la adrenalina mientras descendemos por carreteras asfaltadas.

Pero la aventura no ha terminado aún. Aún nos esperan dos mini-puertos más, siendo el último especialmente duro, con unos 6 kilómetros desafiantes antes de llegar a la villa. Aquí, encontramos refugio en el Refugio para Ciclistas, un lugar mágico donde la amable Sra. Inés recibe con café caliente y dulces caseros, ofreciendo un hogar lejos de casa a un precio más que razonable. Aunque tuvimos la mala suerte de que el refugio estuviera cerrado ese día, encontramos acomodo en El Michay, un restaurante acogedor dirigido por la encantadora Sra. Verónica, que nos brindó los servicios necesarios para reponer fuerzas con una comida y cena reconfortantes y un desayuno abundante.
