Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa05-Chaiten-Villa Santa Lucía

Starting from Chaitén, we embark on the excellent asphalt road that takes us on a dreamy journey, bordering majestic snow-capped volcanoes, serene lakes, and rushing rivers with crystal-clear waters. About 25 kilometers away from Chaitén, we stumble upon a small café hiding an unusual treasure in its garden: a dilapidated airplane, a silent witness to past stories and forgotten adventures.

After crossing the bridge marking the beginning of Lake Yelcho, the road gives way to a challenging gravel track, dotted with loose stones and potholes that put our biking skills to the test. As we progress, the landscape becomes more imposing and wild, preparing us for the challenge that awaits us further ahead.

Approximately 15 kilometers before reaching the town of Santa Lucía, we face the formidable Cuesta Moraga, a steep pass that forces us to ascend over 600 meters in altitude in a thrilling journey. From the top of the pass, we descend with gusto towards Villa Santa Lucía, a small oasis of scattered houses where we find only one open accommodation at Cabañas-Camping El Mañio. Although this place does not offer dinner or breakfast, we are assured that in the village, a private house run by the kind María awaits us with unmatched hospitality.

Despite the tempting invitations to visit the Termas del Amarillo and trek to the Ventisquero Yelcho, we decide to continue our journey. Adventure calls, and we are eager to discover what other wonders await us on our biking route.

Partiendo de El Chaitén, nos lanzamos a la carretera asfaltada que nos lleva por un viaje de ensueño, bordeando majestuosos volcanes nevados, lagos serenos y ríos caudalosos de aguas cristalinas. A unos 25 kilómetros de distancia de Chaitén, nos topamos con una pequeña cafetería que esconde un tesoro inusual en su jardín: un avión desvencijado, testigo mudo de historias pasadas y aventuras olvidadas.

Tras cruzar el puente que marca el comienzo del lago Yelcho, la carretera da paso a una pista de ripio desafiante, salpicada de piedras sueltas y baches que ponen a prueba nuestra destreza sobre las dos ruedas. A medida que avanzamos, el paisaje se vuelve más imponente y salvaje, preparándonos para el desafío que nos aguarda más adelante.

Aproximadamente 15 kilómetros antes de llegar a la localidad de Santa Lucía, nos enfrentamos a la temible Cuesta Moraga, un puerto escarpado que nos obliga a ascender más de 600 metros de altitud en un trayecto lleno de adrenalina. Desde lo alto de la cuesta, descendemos hacia Villa Santa Lucía, un pequeño oasis de casas dispersas donde solo encontramos un alojamiento abierto en las Cabañas-Camping El Mañio. Aunque este lugar no ofrece cena ni desayuno, nos aseguran que en el pueblo una casa particular regentada por la amable María nos espera con una hospitalidad sin igual.

A pesar de las sugerentes invitaciones para visitar las Termas del Amarillo y realizar el trekking al Ventisquero Yelcho, decidimos continuar nuestro camino. La aventura nos llama y estamos ansiosos por descubrir qué más maravillas aguardan en nuestro recorrido en bicicleta.
