Chile/Argentina 2024 - Carretera Austral-Etapa 03-Hornopiren-Camping lago Rio Negro

In Hornopirén, we boarded the ferry, as this town marks the end of Route 7, which resumes its status as a road from Caleta Gonzalo onwards. We decided to arrive early at the SOMARCO FERRY company to secure tickets for the boat, as the night before we saw a large number of tourists and feared not getting a spot on the vessel that would take us to Leptepú. From there, we accessed a well-paved road of about 10 kilometers to another small port, Fiordo Largo, where we boarded another ferry bound for Caleta Gonzalo. We took the opportunity to have lunch at Café Caleta Gonzalo immediately after disembarking and, after a short rest, resumed our journey.

From here, Route 7 turns into a poorly maintained gravel road upon entering Pumalín Park. This road winds through ancient forests and is home to a variety of native wildlife, especially birds. The constant ups and downs make the journey challenging but stimulating, although some slopes may pose a certain difficulty.

We decided to take a break and rest at the camping area by Lago Negro, located next to the lake of the same name. From the camping area, there is a path that leads to the lake in about 20 minutes on foot. This camping area operates under a free or semi-free regime, as we were not charged for setting up the tent. The facilities are basic, with rudimentary toilets, no electricity, and only cold water available.

En Hornopirén, abordamos el ferry, ya que esta localidad marca el final de la Ruta 7, la cual retoma su condición de carretera a partir de Caleta Gonzalo. Decidimos llegar temprano a la compañía SOMARCO FERRY para asegurarnos los billetes del barco, pues la noche anterior observamos una gran afluencia de turistas y temimos no conseguir lugar en la nave que nos llevaría hasta Leptepú. Desde allí, se accede a una carretera bien asfaltada de aproximadamente 10 kilómetros hasta otro pequeño puerto, Fiordo Largo, donde abordamos otro ferry con destino a Caleta Gonzalo. Aprovechamos para almorzar en el Café Caleta Gonzalo nada más desembarcar y, tras un breve descanso, reanudamos nuestra travesía.

A partir de aquí, la Ruta 7 se convierte en una pista de ripio en muy mal estado al ingresar al Parque Pumalín. Este camino atraviesa bosques milenarios y alberga una variada fauna nativa, especialmente aves. Las constantes subidas y bajadas hacen que el recorrido sea desafiante pero estimulante, aunque algunas pendientes pueden representar cierta dificultad.

Decidimos hacer una pausa para descansar en el camping del Lago Negro, situado junto al lago del mismo nombre. Desde el camping, se puede acceder a una senda que conduce al lago en unos 20 minutos a pie. Este camping opera bajo un régimen libre o semilibre, ya que no nos cobraron por instalar la tienda. Los servicios son básicos, con aseos rudimentarios, sin electricidad y solo con agua fría disponible.
