Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 013- Camping Doña Dora - Puerto Rio Tranquilo

"We had an early breakfast and, after photographing several free-roaming domestic animals owned by Doña Dora, and some wild birds, we set off towards Puerto Murta, continuing the challenging route we've become accustomed to. This time, the road is in quite a bad condition, with loose gravel, numerous potholes, and many undulations.

Pedaling through the beautiful valley of the Murta River, crossing the bridges of the same name and the Engaño River, and with the wind at our backs, we made our way to the impressive General Carrera Lake, which we skirted until reaching Puerto Río Tranquilo. General Carrera Lake is one of the highlights of the Carretera Austral. Not only is it the largest lake in Chile and the second largest in South America, but its colors, in shades of blue, turquoise, and sky blue, are unique. The lake, shared with Argentina under the name Lake Buenos Aires, is bordered by Route 7 for 70 kilometers.

Facing General Carrera Lake is Puerto Río Tranquilo, a key stopping point to visit the famous Marble Chapels (also known as Cathedrals or Marble Caves). These formations, located on the lake's shores but not visible from the road, are something unique to behold. The color of the marble reflects the blues and turquoises of the lake. The town was filled with tourists eager to visit the Marble Chapels, and it took us some effort to find accommodation. Finally, we secured a room at Cabañas Patagón Explorador.

After lunch at the Fogón del Sur restaurant on the town's main street, we booked a tour to the Marble Chapels for late afternoon, taking advantage of the fantastic sunset light. The spectacle when seeing them is indescribable, and all the photos we managed to take, though beautiful, don't do justice to how wonderful it is to see them from the boat.

After disembarking, we dined at the Fast Food El Negrito Feliz restaurant, with good value for money. Puerto Río Tranquilo is also the connecting point to the road leading to Bahía Exploradores and Laguna San Rafael. It's 52 kilometers west to reach the Exploradores Glacier viewpoint. Excursions to visit it can be arranged from the town."

Desayunamos temprano y, luego de fotografiar varios animales domésticos en libertad, propiedad de Doña Dora, y algunas aves salvajes, nos dirigimos hacia Puerto Murta continuando el desafiante recorrido al que ya estamos acostumbrados. Esta vez, la carretera se encuentra en bastante mal estado, con el ripio muy suelto, numerosos baches y muchas ondulaciones.

Pedaleando a través del hermoso valle del Río Murta, cruzando los puentes del mismo nombre y del Río Engaño, y con el viento a nuestro favor, avanzamos hasta alcanzar el impresionante Lago General Carrera, que bordeamos hasta llegar a Puerto Río Tranquilo. El Lago General Carrera es uno de los puntos destacados de la Carretera Austral. No solo es el lago más grande de Chile y el segundo de Sudamérica, sino que sus colores, en tonos de azul, turquesa y celeste, son únicos. El lago, compartido con Argentina bajo el nombre de Lago Buenos Aires, está bordeado por la Ruta 7 a lo largo de 70 kilómetros.

Frente al Lago General Carrera se encuentra Puerto Río Tranquilo, un lugar clave para detenerse y visitar las famosas Capillas de Mármol (también conocidas como Catedrales o Cavernas de Mármol). Estas formaciones, situadas en las orillas del lago pero no visibles desde la carretera, son algo único para contemplar. El color del mármol refleja los tonos azules y turquesas del lago. El pueblo estaba lleno de turistas ansiosos por visitar las Capillas de Mármol y nos costó encontrar alojamiento. Finalmente, conseguimos una habitación en las Cabañas Patagón Explorador.

Después de almorzar en el restaurante Fogón del Sur en la calle principal del pueblo, contratamos un tour a las Capillas de Mármol para última hora de la tarde, aprovechando la fantástica luz del atardecer. El espectáculo al verlas es indescriptible y todas las fotos que pudimos tomar, aunque hermosas, no hacen justicia a lo maravilloso que es verlas desde el barco.

Tras desembarcar, cenamos en el Restaurante Fast Food El Negrito Feliz, con una buena relación calidad-precio. Puerto Río Tranquilo también es el punto de conexión con el camino que lleva a Bahía Exploradores y la Laguna San Rafael. Son 52 kilómetros al oeste hasta llegar al mirador del glaciar Exploradores. Para visitarlo, se pueden contratar excursiones desde el pueblo.
