Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 011-Coyhaique-Villa Cerro Castillo

Having indulged in a hearty and delectable breakfast at El Café Peregrino nestled on Magallanes Street 670 in Coyhaique, we set off, braving the bustling traffic and an imposing uphill gradient right from the outset of our journey. To our left looms Cerro Mackay, standing sentinel just 2 kilometers from the city, earning itself the moniker of Coyhaique's guardian. Its distinctive silhouette, with its rugged slopes, captures our attention, though we are no climbers ourselves.

Soon, we encounter El Salto, a majestic waterfall cascading roughly 20 meters in height, nestled amidst the Simpson Valley and Cerro Divisadero, flanking Route 7 that intertwines Balmaceda and Coyhaique.

As we approach the Balmaceda junction, we veer right and ascend once more, this time encountering lighter traffic but contending with an unforgiving headwind. Upon cresting the initial summit at 1000 meters above sea level, we descend through a picturesque gorge, only to ascend once more to Portezuelo Ibáñez, the pinnacle of the Carretera Austral at 1180 meters above sea level. This locale is renowned for its sightings of huemules, adding an air of mystique to our journey.

We descend through the Devil's Slope, and from its vantage point, we are treated to breathtaking vistas of the valley unfolding below, stretching as far as the eye can see, culminating in the majestic sight of Villa Cerro Castillo.

Our sanctuary for the night awaits us at Cabañas Ruta 7 SUR, offering unparalleled views of the rugged Cerro Castillo mountain range. With a café boasting a menu that surpasses mere adequacy, we settle in, basking in the splendor of our adventure-filled day amidst the enchanting landscapes of the Carretera Austral.

Habiendo desayunado bien en cantidad y calidad en El Café Peregrino ubicado en la calle Magallanes 670, DE COYHAIQUE y después de comprar alguna provisión salimos con bastante tráfico y una pendiente importante nada más iniciar la ruta. A nuestra izquierda encontramos el Cerro Mackay a solo 2 km de la ciudad, por lo que algunos lo denominan el guardián de Coyhaique. Llama la atención además de por su cercanía, por su forma. Tiene las laderas cortadas. Es un buen punto para aquellos que realizan escalada, entre los que claramente no nos encontramos nosotros.
Enseguida nos encontramos con El Salto. Corresponde a una cascada que tiene alrededor de 20 metros de altura, ubicada en las cercanías del Valle Simpson y Cerro Divisadero, a orillas de la ruta 7 que une Balmaceda y Coyhaique.
Una vez llegamos al cruce de Balmaceda giramos a la derecha y volvemos a subir, ya con menos tráfico, pero con viento en contra. Una vez coronamos el primer puerto a 1000 m., se desciende por un bonito desfiladero hasta que comenzamos a subir de nuevo el Portezuelo Ibáñez, a 1180 mts.sobre el nivel del mar; cota máxima de la Carretera Austral. Es zona de avistamiento de huemules.
Descendemos por la Cuesta del Diablo y desde su mirador apreciamos las magníficas vistas del valle que se abre a nuestros pies divisando hasta Villa Cerro Castillo.
Nos Alojamos en las Cabañas Ruta 7 SUR con unas vistas impresionantes sobre el macizo montañoso Cerro Castillo. Dispone además de una cafetería con una carta más que aceptable.
