Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 010 -Mañihuales-Coyahique

After breakfast at our accommodation (Hostel Ruta 7), we stock up on provisions for the road at Minimarket TATY, the best-stocked shop in Mañihuales, and continue our journey on the asphalt. It's another full stage on paved roads, but this time with heavy traffic of buses and trucks heading to or from Coyhaique, the largest city in the Aisén region. We're forced to proceed cautiously along the narrow shoulder.

As we pedal on, the landscape unfolds with rolling hills and an increasing number of fallen tree trunks scattered across the meadows, punctuated by splendid rivers like the Simpson River. Its lush vegetation lines the banks, and we're treated to the sight of rapids and waterfalls, such as the Bride's Veil, which appear right beside the road, delighting the cycle traveler.

We have the option to head to Coyhaique by following the paved road towards Puerto Aisén and then taking a left turn, or going straight ahead (both routes cover almost the same distance) along a rarely traveled gravel track. We opt for the more comfortable option, towards Puerto Aisén and then Coyhaique. To reach Coyhaique, we pass through an illuminated tunnel where, some years ago, German cyclists were tragically struck by a vehicle. The tunnel was illuminated after the fatal accident.

Beyond the tunnel, the descent continues for several kilometers. We stop at a viewpoint overlooking the city nestled against the mountainside, signaling that we're nearing Coyhaique. But the hills aren't over yet. After the viewpoint, there's a steep descent followed by about 3 kilometers of intense uphill before reaching the city center. We stay at Hostel Ely, which unfortunately doesn't offer great value for money.

After an evening stroll around the plaza and its surroundings, we're recommended to dine at the Firefighters' Restaurant. It's a traditional eatery attached to the city's fire station, a curious sight to behold, offering more than satisfactory food.

Tras desayunar en el propio alojamiento (Ruta 7) compramos algunas provisiones para el camino en el Minimarket TATY,el mejor provisto de Mañihuales y seguimos ruta por asfalto. Otra etapa completa por carretera asfaltada o cementada, siendo la primera en la que hay mucho tráfico de autobuses y camiones que van o vienen de Coyhaique, la ciudad más grande de la región XI,de Aisén, estamos obligados a ir con precaución cerca del arcén que es muy estrecho.
Siguen sucediéndose las laderas y aumentan los troncos diseminados por las praderas y los ríos espléndidos como el río Simpson con su vegetación de ribera y sus rápidos y cascadas, como la del velo de la novia, que aparecen al lado mismo de la carretera para deleite del cicloviajero.
Hay posibilidad de ir a Coyhaique siguiendo la carretera asfaltada hacia Puerto Aisén y tomando después el desvío hacia la izquierda o ir recto (son casi los mismos km por los dos sitios) por una pista de ripio muy poco frecuentada. Nosotros decidimos la opción más cómoda, hacia Puerto Aisén y luego a Coyhaique, al que se accede tras pasar un túnel iluminado en el que hace unos años atropellaron a unos ciclistas alemanes. Lo han iluminado tras el accidente mortal.
Después del túnel la pendiente continua varios kms . Paramos en el mirador desde donde se aprecia la ciudad apoyada en la montaña ya queda poco para llegar a Coyhaique. Pero no acaban aquí las cuestas. Después del mirador hay una bajada muy rápida y después unos 3 kms de subida pronunciada para acabar en la ciudad. Nos hospedamos en el Hostal Ely con una mala relación precio calidad.
Después de un paseo vespertino por la plaza y alrededores nos recomendaron para cenar el restaurante de Bomberos. Un tradicional comedor adosado al Parque de bomberos de la ciudad. Curioso de ver y comida más que aceptable.
