Chile/Argentina 2024-Etapa 020 Lago del Desierto-El Chalten

We woke up with the cold close to our bones and snow covering the surroundings. After a quick and frugal breakfast and taking down the tent, we crossed our fingers, waiting for the boat that would take us to the southern end of the Lake to arrive on that inclement day. Luckily, right at the scheduled time, we were able to board, securing our bikes in deck. Despite the fog that surrounded us, the journey, although short, gave us a memorable experience. We were lucky enough to glimpse the impressive Huemul glacier from the lake, a wonder of Southern Patagonia.
Upon disembarking, we were greeted by a crowd of hikers, ready to begin trekking to the glacier. Next to the pier is the Lago del Desierto campsite and a closed Gendarmerie post. We continue our route towards El Chaltén. The journey took us through the valley of the Cañadón de los Toros river, with stops to admire Laguna Cóndor, several viewpoints of Fitz Roy, the imposing Eléctrico river with its bridge and the sinuous Las Vueltas river.
Along the way, we faced climbs of a certain level and some sections with headwinds, but the loose gravel tested our skills on the bicycle. It should be noted that from Lago del Desierto to El Chaltén we encountered a lot of traffic, maybe because it was a holiday.
Upon arrival, with the sun setting on the horizon, we were surprised by the bustle of vehicles and tourists. Fortunately, we found accommodation at the cozy Nunataks Bed & Breakfast, an affordable option considering how touristy and expensive El Chaltén can be, known as the base for exploring the mythical Fitz Roy. We decided to spend two nights here to make the most of our visit and begin trekking to Fitz Roy the next day.
During our nights in El Chaltén, we enjoyed delicious dinners at the Rancho Grande restaurant, refueling for the adventures that awaited us.

Nos despertamos con el frío pegado a nuestros huesos y la nieve cubriendo los alrededores. Después de un desayuno rápido y frugal y desmontar la tienda, cruzamos los dedos, esperando que el barco que nos llevaría al extremo sur del Lago llegara ese inclemente día. Por suerte, justo a la hora prevista, pudimos embarcar, asegurando nuestras bicis en cubierta. A pesar de la niebla que nos rodeaba, el trayecto, aunque corto, nos brindó una experiencia memorable. Tuvimos la suerte de vislumbrar el impresionante glaciar Huemul desde el lago, una maravilla de la Patagonia Austral.
Al desembarcar, nos recibió una multitud de excursionistas, listos para emprender el trekking al glaciar. Junto al embarcadero se encuenttra el camping Lago del Desierto y un puesto de la Gendarmería cerrado.Nosotros continuamos nuestra ruta hacia El Chaltén. El trayecto nos llevó por el valle del río Cañadón de los Toros, con paradas para admirar la Laguna Cóndor, varios miradores del Fitz Roy, el imponente río Eléctrico con su puente y el sinuoso río Las Vueltas.
A lo largo del camino, nos enfrentamos a subidas de cierto nivel y algún tramo con viento en contra, pero el ripio suelto puso a prueba nuestra destreza en la bicicleta.A destacar que desde el Lago del Desierto hasta el Chaltén nos encontramos muchísimo tráfico, quizás porque era festivo.
Al llegar, con el sol ocultándose en el horizonte, nos sorprendió el bullicio de vehículos y turistas. Afortunadamente, encontramos alojamiento en el acogedor Bed & Breakfast Nunataks, una opción asequible considerando lo turístico y caro que puede ser El Chaltén, conocido como la base para explorar el mítico Fitz Roy. Decidimos pasar dos noches aquí para aprovechar al máximo nuestra visita y emprender el trekking al Fitz Roy al día siguiente.
Durante nuestras noches en El Chaltén, disfrutamos de deliciosas cenas en el restaurante Rancho Grande, reponiendo energías para las aventuras que nos esperaban.
