Chile/Argentina 2024--Carretera Austral-etapa 019 -Villa O'Higgins-Lago del desierto(Argentina)

We woke up at the crack of dawn because we had to cover the final 7 kilometers of pedaling to Puerto Bahamondes, where the Carretera Austral officially ends. And it's precisely from this point that the 130km route begins through which we'll cross the border separating Chile from Argentina. The adventure truly begins when, in Puerto Bahamondes, to reach Candelario Mancilla, we board a small boat owned by "Turismo Cabañas las Ruedas.” Choosing this company for crossing the Glaciers Lake was a stroke of luck due to their friendliness and professionalism. It's essential to check the departure days as it greatly depends on the weather. We were fortunate as it left on time, at 8 in the morning, but as we progressed across the lake, the wind increased, and upon reaching Candelario, the skipper decided not to return that day, leaving several travelers stranded who were expecting to return on that boat to O'Higgins.

Here's where the real challenge begins:

Unlike the other times we had crossed from one country to another by bike, this time, crossing the border was an adventure in itself. Argentina and Chile share one of the world's largest borders, and it wouldn't be surprising if there were territorial issues between the two nations. One such conflict occurred at Laguna del Desierto in 1965 and was resolved through international arbitration in 1995, granting the disputed 481 km2 to Argentina. Crossing the Chile-Argentina border via Lake del Desierto is, today, a little adventure in itself. At the port of Candelario Mancilla, which, as the Chilean saying goes, is "Where the devil lost his poncho," only one family lives, offering camping services and rooms. Obviously, you can only pay in cash with Chilean currency. It's essential to carry everything you need for this stretch: water, food, money, and camping gear, as there's nowhere to buy anything.

Arriving early in the morning, we decided to continue with our bikes the 21km that separated us from the Argentine border post just north of Lake del Desierto. At first, I had to push the bike for about 5 km due to the steep slopes and the poor condition of the road, until reaching the Chilean border post (Paso Dos Lagunas). My companion, much fitter than me, rode his bike. There was a bit of a queue as some of the boat's companions used a small taxi van for the climb, avoiding the first 5 km of steep ascent, and got ahead of us. It's important to get stamped out because if you skip this step, at the Argentine control, they'll make you turn back.

This van can take your luggage to the sign marking the beginning of Argentina, which I did to travel lighter, aware of the difficulty of the road. After waiting for over an hour for the procedures of those ahead of us to be completed, we finally reached the checkpoint. From this point, we are already on a bike path until reaching the sign marking the Argentine border at "Portezuelo la Divisoria." This second stretch ends with the sign marking the end of Chile and welcoming us to Argentina. Here we found our backpacks piled under a tree (the man with the car arrived before us and decided not to wait for us). The remaining 7 km to Lake del Desierto pass through a dense forest with a narrow dirt road full of steep slopes where tree roots, streams without bridges, and constant potholes become a long nightmare for the determined ones, like us, making the journey by bike. Finally, after a long, very narrow, and difficult slope, we find ourselves on a green plain next to Lake del Desierto, Argentina's customs. Camping is allowed here for free, which we did after the customs procedures, attended by a very friendly gendarme with whom we chatted for a while and who offered us the land to camp freely, explaining that depending on the weather, the boat would arrive the next day around 10/11 in the morning. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking.

At sunset, it started drizzling, and we had to have dinner inside the tent. The temperature dropped below 0°C, and in the morning, we woke up to cold and snow at the lake level.

Nos despertamos al amanecer porque teníamos que recorrer los últimos 7 kilómetros en bicicleta hasta Puerto Bahamondes, donde termina oficialmente la Carretera Austral. Y es precisamente desde este punto donde comienza la ruta de 130 km a través de la cual cruzaremos la frontera que separa Chile de Argentina. La aventura realmente comienza cuando, en Puerto Bahamondes, para llegar a Candelario Mancilla, subimos a un pequeño barco propiedad de "Turismo Cabañas las Ruedas". Elegir esta empresa para cruzar el Lago de los Glaciares fue un golpe de suerte debido a su amabilidad y profesionalismo. Es esencial verificar los días de salida, ya que depende mucho del clima. Tuvimos suerte, ya que salió a tiempo, a las 8 de la mañana, pero a medida que avanzábamos por el lago, el viento aumentaba y al llegar a Candelario, el patrón decidió no regresar ese día, dejando varados a varios viajeros que esperaban regresar en ese barco a O'Higgins.
Aquí es donde comienza el verdadero desafío:
A diferencia de las otras veces que habíamos cruzado de un país a otro en bicicleta, esta vez, cruzar la frontera fue una aventura en sí misma. Argentina y Chile comparten una de las fronteras más grandes del mundo, y no sería sorprendente que hubiera problemas territoriales entre las dos naciones. Uno de estos conflictos ocurrió en la Laguna del Desierto en 1965 y se resolvió mediante arbitraje internacional en 1995, otorgando los disputados 481 km2 a Argentina. Cruzar la frontera Chile-Argentina a través del Lago del Desierto es, hoy en día, una pequeña aventura en sí misma. En el puerto de Candelario Mancilla, que, como dice el dicho chileno, está "donde el diablo perdió el poncho", solo vive una familia que ofrece servicios de camping y habitaciones. Obviamente, solo puedes pagar en efectivo con moneda chilena. Es imprescindible llevar todo lo necesario para este tramo: agua, comida, dinero y equipo de camping, ya que no hay ningún lugar donde comprar nada.
Al llegar temprano por la mañana, decidimos continuar con nuestras bicicletas los 21 km que nos separaban del puesto fronterizo argentino justo al norte del Lago del Desierto. Al principio, tuve que empujar la bicicleta durante unos 5 km debido a las pendientes empinadas y al mal estado del camino, hasta llegar al puesto fronterizo chileno (Paso Dos Lagunas). Mi compañero, mucho más en forma que yo, montó en bicicleta. Había un poco de cola, ya que algunos de los compañeros del barco usaron una pequeña furgoneta taxi para el ascenso, evitando los primeros 5 km de fuerte subida, y nos adelantaron. Es importante que sellen la salida porque si se saltan este paso, en el control argentino te harán regresar.
Esta furgoneta puede llevar tu equipaje hasta el cartel que marca el comienzo de Argentina, lo cual hice para viajar más ligero, consciente de la dificultad del camino. Después de esperar más de una hora a que se formalizaran los trámites de quienes nos precedían. Desde este punto, ya estamos en una pista para bicicletas hasta llegar al cartel que indica la frontera argentina en el "Portezuelo la Divisoria". Este segundo tramo finaliza con la señal que marca el final de Chile y nos da la bienvenida a Argentina. Aquí encontramos nuestras mochilas apiladas bajo un árbol (el señor con el coche llegó antes que nosotros y decidió no esperarnos). Los 7 km restantes hasta el Lago del Desierto pasan por un bosque denso con un camino de tierra estrecho lleno de pendientes pronunciadas donde las raíces de los árboles, los arroyos sin puentes y los baches constantes se convierten en una larga pesadilla para los decididos, como nosotros, a hacer el camino en bicicleta. Finalmente, después de una larga, muy estrecha y difícil pendiente, nos encontramos en una explanada verde junto al "Lago del desierto", la aduana de Argentina. Aquí está permitido acampar gratuitamente, cosa que hicimos después de los trámites de ingreso en la aduana, atendida por un gendarme muy amable con quien charlamos un rato y que nos ofreció el terreno para acampar libremente, explicándonos que dependiendo del tiempo llegaría el barco del día siguiente alrededor de las 10/11 de la mañana. El paisaje que nos rodea es impresionante.
Al atardecer, empezó a lloviznar, y tuvimos que cenar dentro de la tienda. La temperatura bajó por debajo de los 0°C, y por la mañana nos despertamos con frío y con nieve a la altura del lago.
