What excitement this day. Finally, we are going to reach our goal: 1245km traveling the Carretera Austral by bike!
We woke up early in the shed that Doña Maria lent us, completely dry, although it was drizzling outside, beating the other campers to breakfast as the place is a mini cabin with basic elements. It was cold, and we had few provisions. (What more can you ask for in the middle of nowhere).
Once ready, and equipped with rain gear, we began our pedaling. For 7 km it is flat, but then several fairly tough climbs start, saving a large height difference in the 3rd one, but the rest, nothing we haven't done before.
After the 4th climb towards kilometer 31, the terrain becomes flat with endless ups and downs, as usual.
We stopped to observe the landscape, the forests, the rocky mountains ranging from reddish orange to intense black. It's wonderful to see how vegetation makes its way in such hostile terrain, and yet manages to flourish, adorning the mountain with its green colors.
By midday, we stopped at the La Cascada viewpoint, a beautiful waterfall called Salto Collinao that comes from the glaciers and Poza Collinao located at the top of the mountain and is accessible by trekking.
On the way, we marveled at the presence of many black-necked swans in different lakes. But especially in Lake Cisnes (living up to its name). A new climb arrives and from the steep slope, the roofs of some houses can be seen in the distance, we think we are already very close. However, at the apex of the lake, the road turns left and we still have 10 km to go. From there onwards, the terrain is flat, at the level of the lake, and the loose stone returns, making the road quite heavy. But the spirit and enthusiasm of the achievement we are about to fulfill nullify any inconvenience. When we see the sign in the distance announcing the arrival at Villa O'Higgins, my soul mate and I embrace each other.

It took us 18 days to travel the 1245 km of the Carretera Austral, from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins. A goal that, at first, seemed so distant, we had just achieved.
It was quite difficult to find accommodation. Previously, we approached the Ruedas de la Patagonia cabins, which are the best ones that manage the boat that would take us from Puerto Bahamondes to Candelario Mansilla. The owner of the cabins, who is also the owner of the boat and its skipper, did us a great favor since he only had one spot for bikes, and under his responsibility, he included both of us. We stayed at the Turística Alberto Lorenzo hostel, a recent wooden construction, with a always lit wood stove, comfortable beds, and the best hot shower of the entire trip.
That night we celebrated our achievement by dining sumptuously at the San Gabriel Restaurant.

Nos despertamos temprano en el galpón que nos cedió doña María, completamente secos a pesar de la llovizna, adelantándonos a los demás campistas ya que el lugar para desayunar es una mini cabaña con lo básico. Hacía frío y teníamos pocas provisiones, pero ¿qué más se puede pedir en medio de la nada?
Una vez listos y equipados con ropa de lluvia, comenzamos nuestro pedaleo. Durante los primeros 7 km es llano, pero enseguida nos enfrentamos a varios puertos bastante duros, aunque nada que no hayamos hecho antes.
Después de la cuarta subida, hacia el kilómetro 31, el terreno se vuelve llano con infinitos sube y baja, como es costumbre. Nos detenemos a observar el paisaje, los bosques, las montañas rocosas que van desde colores rojo anaranjado hasta el negro intenso. Es maravilloso ver cómo la vegetación se abre paso en terrenos tan hostiles y logra florecer, adornando la montaña con sus colores verdosos.
Pasado el mediodía, nos detenemos en el Mirador La Cascada, una preciosa cascada denominada Salto Collinao que proviene de los glaciares y de la Poza Collinao, accesible en trekking. En el camino, nos maravillamos con la presencia de muchos cisnes de cuello negro en distintos lagos, especialmente en el lago Cisnes (haciendo honor al nombre).
Llega una nueva pendiente hasta el Mirador del Lago Cisnes y desde el cambio de rasante, observamos los tejados de algunas casas a lo lejos, pensando que ya estamos muy cerca. Sin embargo, en el vértice del lago, el camino hace un giro a la izquierda y todavía nos quedan 10 km para llegar. Desde allí en adelante, el terreno es plano, al nivel del lago, y la piedra suelta vuelve, haciendo el camino bastante pesado. Pero el ánimo y el entusiasmo del logro que estamos por cumplir anulan cualquier inconveniente.
Al divisar a lo lejos el cartel que anuncia la llegada a Villa O’Higgins, nos fundimos en un abrazo, mi compañero del alma y yo.
Han sido 18 días para recorrer los 1245 km de la Carretera Austral, desde Puerto Montt hasta Villa O’Higgins. Una meta que al principio parecía tan lejana, ¡y acabamos de culminarla!
Nos costó bastante encontrar alojamiento. Previamente nos acercamos a las cabañas Ruedas de la Patagonia, quienes gestionan el barco que nos llevaría desde Puerto Bahamondes a Candelario Mansilla. El propietario de las cabañas, además de ser dueño del barco y patrón del mismo, nos hizo un gran favor al incluirnos a los dos bajo su responsabilidad, ya que solo disponía de una plaza para bicicletas.
Nos hospedamos en el hostal Turística Alberto Lorenzo, una construcción reciente de madera con cocina a leña siempre encendida, camas cómodas y la mejor ducha de agua caliente de todo el viaje.Esa noche celebramos nuestro logro cenando opíparamente en el Restaurante San Gabriel.
