Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 017-Camping El Risquero - Camping Maria Rios

From the cozy El Risquero campsite, we continue our journey along the R7, through acceptable gravel and flat terrain for about 28 kilometers. Upon reaching the crossroads that leads to Caleta Tortel, we decided not to detour and continue on to Caleta Yungay.

From this point, we face a steep climb, with chasms around us and waterfalls that adorn the landscape with their bravery. Each pedal stroke brought us closer to the top, where a reward awaited us in the form of spectacular views. After this challenging ascent, we embarked on a significant descent, avoiding some obstacles and potholes along the way until we reached Puerto Yungay.

Once in the port, and waiting for the boat, we took advantage of the fact that there is a small cafe to replenish our energy with some local empanadas and sweets. With a satisfied stomach, we boarded the boat that, in addition to accepting vehicles, offered us the privilege of crossing the Mitchell Fjord for free. The wind hit our faces as we enjoyed the landscape that unfolded before us, until we finally reached Rio Bravo, where the modest ferry house welcomed us.

We continue our route following the sinuous meanders of the Año Nuevo River, anticipating the next stop at the María Ríos campsite. As we moved forward, the sky darkened and the cold enveloped us, but the promise of shelter propelled us forward. With luck, we got a place to camp in a warehouse owned by María, sharing the space with a couple from Switzerland. There we pitched our tents, grateful for the protection from the rain and wind.

Although modest, this campsite offered exactly what we needed at the time: a safe haven and a place to rest. The hot shower, located in Maria's home, was a luxury we eagerly awaited after a challenging day on our bike journey.

Desde el acogedor camping El Risquero, continuamos nuestra travesía por la R7, por un ripio aceptable y terreno llano durante unos 28 kilómetros. Al llegar al cruce que lleva a Caleta Tortel, decidimos no desviarnos y seguir camino hasta Caleta Yungay.

A partir de este punto, nos enfrentamos a una empinada subida, con abismos a nuestro alrededor y cascadas que adornan el paisaje con su bravura. Cada pedalada nos acercaba más a la cima, donde nos esperaba una recompensa en forma de vistas espectaculares. Después de esta desafiante ascensión, nos lanzamos a una importante bajada, sorteando algún obstáculo y baches en el camino hasta llegar a Puerto Yungay.

Una vez en el puerto, y a la espera del barco aprovechamos que hay un pequeño café para reponer energías con algunas empanadas y dulces locales. Con el estómago satisfecho, abordamos la embarcación que, además de aceptar vehículos, nos ofrecía el privilegio de cruzar el fiordo Mitchell de forma gratuita. El viento golpeaba nuestro rostro mientras disfrutábamos del paisaje que se desplegaba ante nosotros, hasta que finalmente alcanzamos Rio Bravo, donde nos recibió la modesta caseta del ferry.

Continuamos nuestra ruta siguiendo los sinuosos meandros del río Año Nuevo, anticipando la próxima parada en el camping María Ríos. A medida que avanzábamos, el cielo se oscurecía y el frío nos envolvía, pero la promesa de refugio nos impulsaba hacia adelante. Con suerte, conseguimos plaza para acampar en un almacén propiedad de María, compartiendo el espacio con una pareja de Suiza. Allí montamos nuestras tiendas, agradecidos por la protección contra la lluvia y el viento.

Aunque modesto, este camping ofrecía exactamente lo que necesitábamos en ese momento: un refugio seguro y un lugar para descansar. La ducha de agua caliente, ubicada en la vivienda de María, era un lujo que esperábamos ansiosamente después de un día lleno de desafíos en nuestra travesía en bicicleta.
