Leaving Cochrane, we leave behind the comfort of the asphalt to enter the roughness of the gravel, where adventure becomes a constant companion. Despite the challenges of the road, the landscape gives us its amazing beauty with every pedal stroke. We start from Cochrane ascending, and upon reaching kilometer 7, we delight in the serenity of the Esmeralda lagoon. The Mellizo 1 bridge offers us the majestic roar of the El Salto River waterfall, which merges into the waters of the Baker. In the distance, we see the imposing Juncal and Chacabuco Lakes. Each section of the road is a constant challenge of ups and downs that test our legs.

Upon reaching kilometer 37.7, we face a dizzying and risky descent, where the state of the gravel adds excitement to the journey, until we reach the Los Ñadis detour. Here, we found a small shelter at a bus stop next to the river, where we took the opportunity to regain our strength with a well-deserved lunch. From this point, the gravel improves and we continue on our way.

After traveling 64 kilometers from Cochrane, we reached an important milestone: kilometer 1,000 of the Carretera Austral. We continued forward, already tired, on the km. 75 after Cochrane we found refuge at the El Risquero campsite. It is important to be attentive, as we must deviate from the route to ascend a small promontory to the left of the path.

The campsite, run by a young couple, offers cabins that were occupied at the time, as well as a large flat area ideal for camping. In addition, it has hot showers and, if requested, they prepare a comforting dinner. Saliendo de Cochrane, dejamos atrás el confort del asfalto para adentrarnos en la rudeza del ripio, donde la aventura se convierte en compañera constante. A pesar de los desafíos del camino, el paisaje nos regala su asombrosa belleza a cada pedalada. Partimos de Cochrane ascendiendo, y al alcanzar el kilómetro 7, nos deleitamos con la serenidad de la laguna Esmeralda. El puente Mellizo 1 nos ofrece el rugido majestuoso de la cascada del río El Salto, que se funde en las aguas del Baker. En la distancia, avistamos los imponentes Lagos Juncal y Chacabuco. Cada tramo del camino es un constante desafío de subidas y bajadas que ponen a prueba nuestras piernas.

Al llegar al kilómetro 37,7, nos enfrentamos a una vertiginosa y arriesgada bajada, donde el estado del ripio añade emoción al trayecto, hasta llegar al desvío de Los Ñadis. Aquí, encontramos un pequeño refugio en una parada de autobús junto al río, donde aprovechamos para reponer fuerzas con un merecido almuerzo. A partir de este punto, el ripio mejora y continuamos nuestro camino.

Después de recorrer 64 kilómetros desde Cochrane, alcanzamos un hito importante: el kilómetro 1.000 de la Carretera Austral. Seguimos adelante, ya fatigados, hasta que en el Km.75 desde Cochrane encontramos refugio en el camping El Risquero. Es importante estar atentos, ya que debemos desviarnos de la ruta para ascender un pequeño promontorio a la izquierda del camino.

El camping, atendido por una joven pareja, ofrece cabañas que en ese momento estaban ocupadas, así como un amplio terreno llano ideal para acampar. Además, cuenta con duchas de agua caliente y, si se solicita, preparan una cena reconfortante. Las vistas desde aquí son simplemente espectaculares, recordándonos el valor de cada desafío superado en nuestro viaje en bicicleta.
