Chile/Argentina 2024-Carretera Austral-etapa 015- Puerto Bertrand - Cochrane

Puerto Bertrand is a very touristy point on the Carretera Austral. On the one hand, due to the beauty of the turquoise waters of Lake Bertrand, which later give rise to the Baker River. On the other hand, many tourists are attracted to the Baker River, which is a great place for rafting and sport fishing. We left Puerto Bertrand without any possibility of having breakfast since all hospitality establishments remained closed. A forest firefighter, very kind, told us that about 7 km away and on the edge of the road were the cabins of his friend Héctor who kindly assisted us with his wife and was able to satisfy our appetite with some fantastic scrambled eggs with vegetables and a good coffee. A few kilometers further on you pass near the confluence of the Baker and Nef rivers. Mandatory stop. There are some trails to get closer and contemplate the wonderful meeting of the two rivers. The Baker that flows strongly descending towards the Nef through an imposing waterfall and the Nef more modest in its flow. With the Baker River on our right after winding along the road we arrive at the Chacabuco River Bridge
where a long and hard climb begins with an endless straight.
We stopped to eat our provisions at the La Confluencia viewpoint with magnificent views of the meeting of the Baker and Chacabuco rivers. Here is also the fork to go to Chacabuco Park and the Argentine border. A family of guanacos surprised us by crossing the road near the viewpoint, reminding us of the richness of life that lives in these places.
From this port and after a long descent we reached a paved area where we saw huemuls at a certain distance on the edge of the Baker River that we did not abandon until we climbed a small port, finding the Cochrane River on the way down and climbing again until we reached our destination.
Cochrane is a medium-sized city with all services. There is a good offer of accommodation. It was already sunset and after finding a place to spend the night and walking around the town we went to dinner at the KAU AIKE restaurant based on vegetable soup, salad and meat, an established menu with a good quality/price ratio.

Puerto Bertrand es un punto de la Carretera Austral muy turístico. Por un lado, debido a la belleza de las aguas turquesas del Lago Bertrand, que luego dan origen al Río Baker. Por otro lado, muchos turistas son atraídos por el Río Baker que es un gran lugar para realizar rafting y pesca deportiva. Salimos de Puerto Bertrand sin posibilidad alguna de desayunar pues todos los establecimientos de hostelería permanecían cerrados. Un bombero forestal, muy amable, nos indicó que a unos 7 kms y al borde de la carretera se encontraban las cabañas de su amigo Héctor quien nos atendió junto a su esposa amablemente pudiendo satisfacer nuestro apetito con unos fantásticos huevos revueltos con verduras y un buen café. Unos kilómetros más adelante se pasa cerca de la confluencia de los ríos Baker y Nef. Parada obligatoria. Hay algunos senderos para acercarse y contemplar el maravilloso encuentro de los dos ríos. El Baker que fluye con fuerza descendiendo hacia el Nef por una imponente cascada y el Nef más modesto en su fluir. Con el río Baker a nuestra derecha después de serpentear en la carretera llegamos al puente del río Chacabuco
donde comienza un puerto largo y duro con una recta interminable.
Paramos a comer nuestras provisiones en el mirador La Confluencia con magníficas vistas al encuentro de los ríos Baker y Chacabuco. Aquí también se encuentra la bifurcación para ir hacia el parque Chacabuco y la frontera argentina. Una familia de guanacos nos dio la sorpresa al cruzar la carretera cerca del mirador, recordándonos la riqueza de vida que habita en estos parajes.
De este puerto y tras una larga bajada llegamos a una zona asfaltada donde avistamos huemules a cierta distancia al borde del río Baker que no abandonamos hasta subir un pequeño puerto encontrando a la bajada el rio Cochrane y volviendo a subir hasta alcanzar nuestro destino.
Cochrane es una ciudad mediana con todos los servicios. Hay buena oferta de alojamientos. Era ya el atardecer y tras encontrar donde pasar la noche y pasear por el pueblo nos fuimos a cenar en el restaurante KAU AIKE a base de sopa de verduras, ensalada y carne, un menú establecido de buena relación calidad/precio.
