With the fresh breeze of the memory of the majestic Marble Chapels still in our minds, we left Puerto Río Tranquilo heading south, determined to continue exploring the paths less traveled. We venture towards the drainage of the imposing General Carrera Lake, known as the El Maitén crossing. There, in front of us, a fork opens up that offers us the option of heading towards Puerto Guadal and Chile Chico, the border city that shares its limits with the Argentine town of Los Antiguos, stands as a tempting option for those intrepid who wish continue your journey along the mythical Route 40.
As we move forward, we can't help but marvel at the vibrant colors of Lake General Carrera and the majestic Andes Mountains. However, the panorama of the hills and mountains also draws our attention, where hundreds of burned trees bear witness to the legacy of history. A local revealed to us that these are the vestiges of fires caused by settlers more than half a century ago, in their quest to conquer these lands at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. He reminded us of the words of those times: “The government of Chile offered land to those who left it clean. “Cleaning meant stripping them of all their vegetation.”
From the El Maitén crossing, on the Carretera Austral, each kilometer brings us closer to Puerto Bertrand where the powerful Baker River, the largest in Chile, has its origin.
After facing a steep climb, we reached our goal.
We arrived at dusk and found a precarious accommodation in the upper part of the town, the Doña Dora campsite. It also has cabins that were occupied that day. We were also able to have dinner here.
The views from the Costanera at the water's edge are impressive.
The only possibility of finding wifi in the town was having a coffee at the Café Bertrand Lodge.

Con la fresca brisa del recuerdo de las majestuosas Capillas de Mármol aún en nuestras mentes, partimos de Puerto Río Tranquilo rumbo al sur, decididos a seguir explorando los caminos menos transitados. Nos aventuramos hacia el desagüe del imponente Lago General Carrera, conocido como el cruce El Maitén. Allí, frente a nosotros, se abre una bifurcación que nos ofrece la opción de dirigirnos hacia Puerto Guadal y Chile Chico, la ciudad fronteriza que comparte sus límites con la localidad argentina de Los Antiguos, se alza como una tentadora opción para aquellos intrépidos que deseen continuar su travesía por la mítica Ruta 40.
Mientras avanzamos, no podemos evitar maravillarnos ante los vibrantes colores del Lago General Carrera y la majestuosa Cordillera de los Andes. Sin embargo, también nos llama poderosamente la atención el panorama de los cerros y montañas, donde cientos de árboles quemados testimonian el legado de la historia. Un lugareño nos reveló que estos son los vestigios de incendios provocados por los colonos hace más de medio siglo, en su afán por conquistar estas tierras a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Nos recordó las palabras de aquellos tiempos: “El gobierno de Chile ofrecía tierras a quienes las dejaran limpias. Limpiar significaba despojarlas de toda su vegetación”.
Desde el cruce El Maitén, en la Carretera Austral, cada kilómetro nos acerca más a Puerto Bertrand donde el poderoso río Baker, el más caudaloso de Chile, tiene su origen.
Después de enfrentarnos a una empinada subida, alcanzamos nuestra meta.
Llegamos al atardecer y encontramos un precario alojamiento en la parte alta del pueblo, el camping de Doña Dora. También dispone de cabañas que ese día estaban ocupadas. Aquí también pudimos cenar.
Las vistas desde la Costanera al borde del agua son impresionantes.
La única posibilidad de encontrar wifi en el pueblo fue tomándonos un café en el Café Bertrand Lodge.
