With the first light of dawn, we left the Río Negro campsite behind and ventured back onto the gravel, the unwavering companion of our bicycle journey. The road winds through wild landscapes until, finally, the road turns into asphalt just before reaching Chaitén. This population, which in 2008 was buried under ashes when the Chaitén volcano woke up from its slumber, welcomes us with the force of nature and the testament of its catastrophic eruptions.

The scenery that opens before us is colossal, with a virgin forest that seems to retain ancestral secrets and a detour that promises to take us along paths guarded by ancient larch trees. As we approach Chaitén, the damage caused by the volcano's eruption becomes evident. Thousands of logs lie scattered on the ground, silent witnesses to the fury unleashed by volcanic activity. The trees, singed by the scorching heat, bear witness to the intensity of the event.

The town itself was devastated by the avalanche of mud and stones that descended after the river flooded, forcing the evacuation of all its inhabitants. Although today the devastation can be clearly seen, Chaitén has been reborn from the ashes and its streets are populated again. However, the volcano remains active, releasing an imposing column of gases that reminds us of the fragility of life in the face of the power of nature. We found a room in La Madre Hostel.

Con la primera luz del alba, dejamos atrás el camping del Río Negro y nos aventuramos de nuevo en el ripio, el compañero inquebrantable de nuestra travesía en bicicleta. El camino serpentea entre paisajes salvajes hasta que, finalmente, la carretera se transforma en asfalto justo antes de alcanzar Chaitén. Esta población, que en 2008 fue sepultada bajo las cenizas cuando el volcán Chaitén despertó de su letargo, nos recibe con la fuerza de la naturaleza y el testamento de sus catastróficas erupciones.

El escenario que se abre ante nosotros es colosal, con un bosque virgen que parece retener secretos ancestrales y un desvío que promete llevarnos por senderos custodiados por alerces milenarios. A medida que nos aproximamos a Chaitén, los estragos causados por la erupción del volcán se hacen evidentes. Miles de troncos yacen dispersos por el suelo, testigos mudos de la furia desatada por la actividad volcánica. Los árboles, chamuscados por el calor abrasador, dan testimonio de la intensidad del evento.

El pueblo mismo quedó arrasado por la avalancha de lodo y piedras que descendió tras la crecida del río, obligando a la evacuación de todos sus habitantes. Aunque hoy en día se aprecia la devastación con claridad, Chaitén ha renacido de las cenizas y sus calles vuelven a estar pobladas. Sin embargo, el volcán sigue activo, lanzando una columna imponente de gases que nos recuerda la fragilidad de la vida frente al poderío de la naturaleza.Encontramos habitación en el Hostal La Madre.
